4 Tips for Selecting a Hearing Aid

The majority of people with hearing loss can enhance their auditory experience by wearing a hearing aid. With numerous styles available, however, you’ll want to ensure that you choose the right one. While your audiologist will provide advice and assistance, it’s helpful to know what factors may influence your decision. With this in mind, take a look at these four useful tips for selecting the right hearing aid for your needs:

1. Identify must-have features

Many of today’s hearing aids are packed with features, which can ensure that your hearing devices provide you with maximum functionality. However, numerous features can increase the size of a hearing aid, so there may be a trade-off. By thinking about which features you’ll really make use of, you can select a hearing aid that suits your needs and also offers discretion. If you want to wear a hearing aid that can barely be seen, for example, you may decide that there are some features you can forego in favor of a smaller-sized device. If you’ve been diagnosed with other hearing-related issues, such as tinnitus, you may also want to consider choosing a device that offers tinnitus masking features. This can help to relieve your symptoms and, as a result, enhance your hearing function. Of course, even the smallest hearing aids come offer impressive functionality, so you won’t miss out if you do choose a smaller device. With an array of features to consider, such as direct audio input, wireless connectivity, remote controls, automated adjustments, noise reduction and directional microphones, spend some time thinking about which extras will have the most positive impact on your auditory experience.

2. Choose a style

Hearing aids come in many styles, with behind the ear (BTE), in the ear (ITE) and in the canal (ITC) being amongst the most popular. Some styles of hearing aids are most suited to particular types of hearing loss, so be sure to take advice from your audiologist. However, you’ll find that BTE, ITE and ITC hearing devices are suitable for the majority of people with hearing loss. As the name suggests, a behind-the-ear hearing aid sits partially behind the ear, with an earpiece that sits in the outer ear canal. Although this style of device is more conspicuous than others, slimline designs limit their visibility. Both ITE and ITC hearing devices offer a more discreet option, with ITE hearing aids sitting in the outer bowl and ITC devices sitting within the ear canal itself. If you want to ensure your hearing aids are virtually impossible, an ITC hearing device might be the right option for you.

3. Consider a rechargeable device

For many people, changing the batteries in a device is the most inconvenient aspect of wearing a hearing aid. If you want to avoid this issue, selecting a rechargeable hearing aid could be a better move for you. When they’re not in use, these types of hearing devices can simply be connected to power and recharged, in the same way that you recharge a smartphone or tablet. What’s more – with the right connectors or cables, you can even recharge your hearing devices when you’re on the go by a power bank or in-car charging station.

4. Assess your lifestyle

Your day-to-day lifestyle can have a significant impact on the type of hearing aid that offers the best functionality. If you routinely spend a lot of time in busy environments with a lot of background noise, for example, you’ll want a hearing aid that can channel this noise out effectively. While many devices offer noise filters, some are more advanced than others. Alternatively, if you use a lot of technology, either at work or home, you may prefer a hearing aid that can sync with a range of devices. If so, a hearing device with its own native app, as well as wireless connectivity and the ability to adjust the controls from your smartphone, could be the ideal solution.
